Even more about Evan …

As a young child Evan’s mom, a teacher, would write down what he said about his drawings in order to make stories out of them. One day his parents showed a neighbor who was a professional editor. She got cancer and Evan’s dad asked him to write a story for her. He wrote a children’s story called “A Happy Tale” and gave it to her as a present. In the 6th grade he won an essay contest and read it in front of the whole school. The essay was put in a time capsule with other essay winners from each grade. It is buried on the school grounds and won’t be opened until 2086 or so. In High School Evan and his friends went to an open mic at a cafe. There he watched college students read poems and entertain the audience. Evan decided right then and there he was going to college to be a poet at open mikes. By the time he graduated college he won first place in a poetry contest, was a finalist in a regional playwriting competition, and was recognized by the faculty and received an award for his short story “Forbidden Fruit” (now available as “Elnora and the Man” on Amazon!). His creative writing teacher in college told him he could go to Grad School to study writing further, so he applied to the fiction track at Naropa, The Jack Kerouac School of Disembodied Poetics, where he attended from 1999 to 2001.
